Before your Loaders arrive

  1. Refrigerant must be removed by a certified technician before pickup. Your Loaders do not remove refrigerant and cannot take an appliance that still contains it.
  2. Every appliance needs to be disconnected before pickup, including electrical, gas, and plumbing connections.
  3. Clear out food and lift out any loose shelves or drawers.
  4. Measure the narrowest doorway on the path out and note it when you book.
  5. Tell us if the unit sits in a basement or upstairs, so your Loaders expect the stairs.

Your Loaders pick up the unit once it is disconnected and ready to move.

What happens to your old appliance

LoadUp always tries to donate a working appliance first. Whether an appliance can be donated depends on its condition, your location, and whether a local donation center will accept it.

When no local donation center will accept an appliance, responsible disposal is the priority. LoadUp recycles appliances whenever possible.

Fridge versus doorway

A full-size refrigerator is usually the heaviest appliance in the kitchen, and the one most likely to be wider than the doorway it has to leave through. The doors and handles often come off before the body will clear the frame, and in older homes the real sticking point is that tight turn at the bottom of the stairs. Two minutes with a tape measure settles it: find the narrowest doorway on the way out and note it when you book.

Refrigerator removal FAQs

Good to know before you book

Straight answers on cost, prep and what happens on the day.

Do I need to empty the refrigerator first?

Yes. Clear out the food and lift out any loose shelves or drawers. A full fridge is heavier, and loose glass shelves have a habit of sliding at exactly the wrong moment on the stairs.

Can a refrigerator come out of a basement or a second floor?

Yes. Tell us where it sits when you book, and your Loaders arrive knowing about the stairs and the turns before they see them.

What has to happen before you can take it?

Refrigerant must be removed by a certified technician before pickup. Your Loaders do not remove refrigerant and cannot take an appliance that still contains it.

How much does refrigerator removal cost?

Refrigerator removal starts at $115 through the LoadUp network. What you actually pay depends on how many appliances are going, how big they are, and whether you choose curbside or in-home pickup. A basement or an upper floor can change the quote too. Either way, the full price is on screen before you confirm.

Do I need to disconnect my appliance before pickup?

Yes. Every appliance needs to be disconnected before pickup, including electrical, gas, and plumbing connections. Your Loaders pick up the unit once it is disconnected and ready to move. If you're not sure how to disconnect a specific appliance, a plumber or electrician can help beforehand.

Can I get same-day appliance pickup?

Often, yes. Book before noon and same-day pickup is available across the LoadUp network, though availability may vary by location. Planning ahead instead? You can book for the next day or up to 90 days out.

Can I bundle multiple different appliances into one pickup?

Yes, and it's the cheaper way to do it. Clearing out a kitchen? Put the refrigerator, dishwasher and stove on one booking instead of three. The service fee is charged once per pickup, so each extra appliance adds only its own price, and you see the new total before you confirm.

Can I get a rebate or cash back for recycling an old appliance?

Sometimes, depending on where you live. Some utility companies and appliance manufacturers run recycling rebate programs, often for refrigerators and freezers specifically, that pay a modest amount, typically in the $15 to $50 range, for turning in a working or non-working unit through a specific drop-off or pickup process. Programs and payouts vary a lot from place to place, so check with your local utility first. A rebate program and a pickup service usually aren't the same thing.

Are old appliances considered hazardous or e-waste?

Some are, depending on the type. Appliances with refrigerant, like refrigerators, freezers, and AC units, fall under EPA regulations because of the refrigerant, and small electronics-heavy appliances can qualify as e-waste in some municipalities. Ovens, dishwashers and washers generally don't need special handling, but local rules vary, so it's worth a quick check if you're getting rid of one yourself.

Why do appliance removal prices vary so much between item types?

Mostly weight, size and how awkward the thing is to carry. A microwave or coffee maker is a quick, light job. A water heater or furnace is heavy and awkward, and sometimes takes extra labor. Appliances with refrigerant or gas connections also tend to price higher, reflecting the added care needed around those components even though the actual disconnection work falls to you or a technician beforehand.
