The California climate and your appliances

California spans four climate types under the 2021 International Energy Conservation Code, and the appliances that work hardest change with them.

  • 2B · 3BHot and dry

Los Angeles, San Diego and Fresno

Intense summers, low humidity and mild winters, with air conditioning doing most of the work.

Works hardest here: AC Unit, Refrigerator, Grill

  • 3C · 4CMild and damp

San Jose, San Francisco and Oakland

Cool summers and long, wet winters, with little need for air conditioning.

Works hardest here: Dehumidifier, Space Heater, Dryer

  • 5B · 6BCold and dry

    Truckee, Grass Valley and Susanville

Cold, dry winters and big swings between day and night, with a long heating season.

Works hardest here: Furnace, Space Heater, Box Fan

  • 4BDry, with hot summers and cold winters

South Lake Tahoe, Clearlake and Placerville

Low humidity, hot summers and cold winters, so homes lean on both heating and cooling.

Works hardest here: Furnace, AC Unit, Space Heater

What to have ready before your Loaders arrive

What happens to your old appliance

LoadUp always tries to donate a working appliance first. Whether an appliance can be donated depends on its condition, your location, and whether a local donation center will accept it.

When no local donation center will accept an appliance, responsible disposal is the priority. LoadUp recycles appliances whenever possible.

California FAQs

Good to know before you book

Straight answers on price, timing and getting ready for a pickup in California.

How much does appliance removal cost in California?

Prices start at $70 for a small appliance such as a microwave, and every appliance has its own starting price: a dishwasher from $95, a refrigerator from $115, a water heater from $140. The area service fee varies by ZIP code, so you see the exact total for your address before you book.

Which cities in California do you cover?

Pickups are available in 468 towns and cities across California, including Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose and San Francisco. The largest are listed above, each with its own page.

Is same-day appliance pickup available in California?

Often. Same-day pickups are available across the LoadUp network when you book before noon, though availability varies by location, so the booking window shows what is open at your address. Same-day adds $10; next-day and later pickups can be booked up to 90 days ahead.

Can I get rid of several appliances in one pickup in California?

Yes, and it costs less than separate pickups. The area service fee is charged once per pickup, so each appliance after the first adds only its add-on price, from +$15. The pickup calculator on the pricing page adds up a starting total for your list.

In California, will the Loaders come inside, or can I leave the appliance outside?

Either. With in-home pickup your Loaders carry the appliance out from wherever it sits, including basements and upstairs rooms. If it is already outside, curbside pickup saves $5 and you can skip the appointment.

What has to happen before a pickup in California?

Every appliance needs to be disconnected before pickup, including electrical, gas, and plumbing connections. Refrigerant must be removed by a certified technician before pickup. This applies only to refrigerators, freezers, wine fridges, ice machines, dehumidifiers and AC units. Clear a path from the appliance to the door before the pickup window.
